Cherry blossom season is peak travel time in Korea for good reason.

Millions of tourists flock to Korea from all over the world, just for the chance to enjoy cherry blossoms in spring – making it one of the peak travel seasons of the year.

Typically blooming from mid-March to mid-April, cherry blossom season in Korea is one of the most beloved times of the year, for both locals and travelers alike.

When is Cherry Blossom Season in Korea?

Spring seems to be arriving earlier and earlier with each passing year, and cherry blossoms in Korea are following suit. Blessing us with their beauty as early as the last weeks of March, they might stick around until the 2nd week of April. If we’re lucky.

cherry blossoms in korea | Simni cherry blossom trail in hadong

Cherry blossom season in Korea seems to get shorter and shorter every year.

It all depends on the weather. From bud to bloom to dramatic death, the whole Korean cherry blossom season lasts a month at best.

All bets are off if it rains or there’s a lot of wind. These factors will shorten their lifespan painfully. They’re fickle like that.

In March and April, you can see cherry blossoms in Korea

The changing global climate is also having a major impact on the timing of cherry blossom season in Korea. Last spring, they peaked incredibly early, and fell to the ground a lot faster than expected.

Who knows what the 2024 Korean cherry blossoms will bring? Only time will tell…

Korea Cherry Blossom Forecast 2024

It’s impossible to predict EXACTLY when the cherry blossoms in South Korea will appear with 100% certainty, but it doesn’t stop people from trying!

Generally speaking, cherry blossoms in Korea appear in mid-March and last until mid-April. When you’re planning your travels to South Korea, remember that cherry blossoms bloom from south to north.

cherry blossoms in korea | hwagae simri cherry blossom road

Cherry blossom forecasting is a national obsession.

In 2024, the first cherry blossoms are forecast to appear in Busan on March 22nd. The final peak of cherry blossoms in Korea is forecast to be in Chuncheon (near Nami Island) around April 14th. Seoul is projected to start blooming around April 3rd, and peak by April 10th.

Here’s the most updated Korean cherry blossom forecast for 2024 so far. These were just updated by the weatheri website, and are based on current weather conditions.

South Korean Cherry Blossom Forecast 2024My personal take? I’m honestly not sure. These blooming dates are a little earlier than historical blooming dates, but not by much. If 2024 is anything like last year, these dates will miss the cherry blossoms in Seoul completely!

I’d still say that the ideal dates to visit Korea for cherry blossoms in 2024 would be the last week of March and the first days of April. Any earlier or later and you’ll likely miss the best of them.

I’ve provided full forecast details for various cherry blossom hotspots around Korea in the following chart. First bloom is when the first cherry blossoms are expected to appear, and at peak bloom, 80 to 90% of the buds have flowered.

Where to See Cherry Blossoms in Korea

Keep in mind that cherry blossoms in Korea will appear where it’s warmest first, so head to Jeju, Busan, or anywhere on the south end of the Peninsula, if you’re visiting near the end of March or very beginning of April. Any time after that, head north.

I dare you to resist falling in love with the cherry blossoms that take over Korea in April.

If you can’t make it to Korea in the first week of April, head to the northeastern coastal regions, which are usually a lot cooler than the interior of the country. The Eden Cherry Blossom Festival in Gapyeong is a good option to check out, if you’re arriving in Korea a bit later on in April.

And if you’re arriving after mid-April, search out king cherry blossoms which are pinker, bloom later, and are completely stunning in their own way.

My Favorite Cherry Blossoms in Korea

There are literally cherry blossoms EVERYWHERE you turn in Korea, but there are some that are just so extraordinarily beautiful, they still leave me speechless.

I still look forward to cherry blossom season – even after 13 years.

They are:

  1. Chimsanjeong Pavilion in Daegu
  2. Gyeonghwa Station in Jinhae
  3. Hwagae 10-ri Cherry Blossom Road in Hadong
  4. Seomjingang Cherry Blossom Trail in Gurye
  5. Seokchon Lake in Seoul

Best Cherry Blossom Festivals in Korea 2024

Some cherry blossom festival dates in Korea have been released, but they’re mostly not finalized. Everything is still subject to change, based on weather conditions. However, in 2024, most, if not all of these festivals will take place in the last few weeks of March, and end in early April.

They have for every single year I’ve lived in Korea (13 years!). The cherry blossom festivals in Korea usually run for a 2 to 7 day span, including at least 1 weekend to accommodate as many visitors as possible.

That doesn’t mean you can’t head to these locations outside of festival dates. Of course you can! It just means there won’t be extra activities on offer, and you’ll have to focus solely on the beauty of the cherry blossoms in Korea themselves… maybe even without the crowds.

I’ve updated Korea cherry blossom festival dates for 2024 wherever possible. Keep checking back though, as I’ll continue to update as more information is released.

Jinhae Gunhangje Cherry Blossom Festival 2024 | 진해군항제

Festival Dates: March 23rd – April 1st, 2024

Address: Gyeongsangnam-do, Changwon-si, Jinhae-gu, Tongsin-dong | 경상남도 창원시 진해구 통신동

After years of cancellations, the Jinhae Gunhangje Festival was back in a big way last year, and the tradition promises to continue! This is the largest, most famous cherry blossom festival in Korea, with over 4 million visitors attending last year.

There’s good reason. Jinhae offers scenes of the most impossibly romantic cherry blossoms in Korea.

You can gaze at pale pink petals as they drift sentimentally down onto the train tracks of Gyeonghwa Station, or snap a pic at one of the most iconic spots to see cherry blossoms in Korea – the tunnel of cherry trees atop Jinhae’s Yeojwacheon Stream.

Expanded to include more experiences from Changwon’s defence industry, you can also expect a huge military parade, Black Eagles air show, multi-media fireworks, food markets, and musical entertainment during the festival.

I checked out Jinhae during cherry blossom season a few years ago, and I personally haven’t seen a more stunning concentration of cherry blossom trees than at Gyeonghwa Station in Jinhae. Their beauty was mind-boggling!

The concentration of cherry blossoms at Gyeonghwa Station is incredible.

The Jinhae Cherry Blossom Festival, is one of my 5 most breathtaking spots to see cherry blossoms in Korea at their absolute peak.

Unless you have a car, I recommend joining a day tour to this festival, because it costs practically the same as traveling to Jinhae using public transit. It’s faster and a whole lot more convenient. You’ll arrive fresh and ready to conquer all that fluffy pinkness.

jinhae gunjangje cherry blossom festival

Jinhae is one of the best and biggest cherry blossom festivals in Korea.

To break it down, a one-way express bus ticket from Seoul to Masan costs 35,000 won, but then you still have to get to Jinhae and handle local transport around the festival yourself.

Cherry blossom hotspots in Jinhae are pretty spread out, so this is definitely the most affordable and convenient option.

Festival Dates: March 27th – 31st, 2024

Address: 47 Jamsil-dong, Songpa-gu, Seoul | 서울특별시 송파구 잠실동 47

The Seokchon Lake Cherry Blossom Festival in Korea is near and dear to my heart, because it’s the one I never miss. Sure, part of it is because Seokchon Lake is walking distance from my house, but it’s also because it’s incredibly gorgeous.

Cherry Blossom Festival Dates: March 29th – April 2nd, 2024

Address: Yeouiseo-ro, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul | 서울특별시 영등포구 여의서로

Yeouido is perhaps the best, albeit one of the most crowded places in Seoul to see not just cherry blossoms in Korea, but also azaleas, forsythia, and other spring flowers in full bloom. With 1,400 to 1,600 trees in the park, you’re guaranteed a stunning and dramatic sight.

An alternative to avoid the crowds is to take a Han River Cruise during Korea’s cherry blossom season. Yeouido is the starting dock for these boat rides, and it’ll take you right past all those gorgeous spring flowers.

Festival Dates: March 22nd – 24th, 2024

Address: 24, Seogwang-ro 2-gil, Jeju-si, Jeju-do

Cherry blossoms in Korea bloom earliest on Jeju Island, along with vibrant fields of yellow canola. The best places for cherry blossom viewing are spread all over the island, so it’s wise to book a private taxi or van tour, to avoid wasting time. Public transport can be pretty slow on Jeju Island, since it’s so big.

If you’re visiting Jeju a bit later in the season, you might be able to see grandest cherry blossoms of them all – the King Cherry blossoms.

Best seen all over Seogwipo’s downtown and around Jeju Sports Complex in late April, these cherry blossoms in Korea fully bloom for only 2 to 3 days. They are more fleeting than normal… it that’s even possible. You’ll have to be perfect with your timing to catch them!

If you’d like to run under a sea of falling cherry blossom petals in Korea, you can take part in the Gyeongju Cherry Blossom Marathon. Beginning at Gyeongju Culture Expo Square, the mostly flat course, can be run in 5km, 10km, half or full marathon distances.

gyeongju cherry blossom marathon in korea in april

The Gyeongju Cherry Blossom Marathon takes place every April in Korea.

If you have time, I recommend staying in Gyeongju for 2 or 3 days. I recently visited, and had a wonderful time exploring Korea’s Silla Dynasty History and eating as much ssambap as I could. This small city is considered Korea’s “museum without walls,” and it’s well worth a visit.

Ssambap is a must-eat when visiting Gyeongju, Korea

If you do decide to spend a couple of days exploring this chilled out city, I can’t recommend staying at the Apple House enough. I stayed in this little motel on my last visit there, and it’s definitely the best budget accommodation I’ve stayed in the country.

Like most Korean motels, the interior design can be called interesting at best, but in terms of value and convenience, it really can’t be beat.

It’s walking distance to a ton of major tourist sites, as well as trendy cafe and restaurant street Hwangnidan-gil, plus you actually get big bath towels there. BIG bath towels. In Korea! Imagine.

Hellooo Shelley! It’s so good to chance upon your post and find that you have lived in Seoul for so long! I’ve been trying to research on the days of peak blooms in different areas and most webs just wrote Early April etc.

I would really appreciate it if you can give me some advice here!

I’ll be travelling to Korea next year from 26march to 6 april 2020. Am intending to visit Busan (with Jinhae, Gyeongju day trips) and Seoul! Just wondering when is a good day to visit Jinhae and Gyeongju? Also, I rented a hanbok in Seoul hoping for photos with the cherry blossoms in the palaces and parks, but I’m a bit worried that there might not be much blooms by 6 April. Will they be close to peak by then? Thanks for the valuable info! ?

Yay that’s great!! Thanks for spending time replying! I’m thinking of planning accommodations soon as the forecast usually comes by Feb right? Am confused because I read up that Jinhae festival usually falls on 1-10april on most years. Is it possible to head there on 30/31 March before the festival start, say there is no fixed entrance period I hope?

If I plan it as the visiting dates below, do you reckon Jin Hae and Gyeongju area would have peaked or early bloom only? Or would you can advise me to push Jin Hae and Gyeongju slightly by 1-2 days late?

        Busan: 26 to 29 March (4 days)
Jin Hae: 30 March (1 day)
        Gyeongju: 31 March (1 day)
        Seoul: 1 to 6 April (6 days)

Terrific post Shelley. I hadn’t realized the whole cherry blossom thing was as big as it is in Korea. We get streets of them in Vancouver, and in some of the parks too, but nothing like Korea. Or Japan. We’ll be in Kyoto March 12-26 and hoping to catch the beginning of the season there.

I finally understood the whole cherry blossom obsession when I lived in Washington, DC, for a year. Before that, I couldn’t really imagine traveling somewhere just to see a bunch of pink buds and blooms. I get it now! They are so delicate and soft and magical, and I slowly walked around underneath the boughs, head tipped up, staggering like I was high on drugs! Seoul’s blossoms are stunning, so maybe that’s when I’ll try to drag J back to Korea someday!
