Our 2014 Travel Resolutions
After spending most of 2012 traveling around the world, we were ready to stay in one place and enjoy the steadiness, calm and comfort of home. In 2013, we did just that, and now that we’re sufficiently rejuvenated, we’re itching to explore some brand-new destinations.
In the past, our travel planning essentially involved pinning a map of Asia on the wall, and shooting darts at it to pick where to go next, but for 2014, we’re setting our travel binoculars a bit further afield and choosing places we really, really want to see and experience – no matter the cost, distance or weather.
February: Chasing the Northern Lights in Scandinavia (with a side trip to St. Petersburg, Russia)
I’ve wanted to see the aurora borealis for as long as I can remember. I could safely say that there is no other travel wish higher on my list than this. The only reason we haven’t gone sooner is because it’s freezing cold, and Scandinavia is super expensive.
In the winter time, our inclination is always towards sun, sand and beach, but with a solar maximum predicted for 2013-2014, there’s no better time to venture into the snow and ice, than right now.
In February, we’ll be spending a few days in Stockholm and Helsinki, and taking a short side trip to St. Petersburg, Russia, before heading far north to Ivalo in Finnish Lapland, and Karasjok in Finnmark (Northern Norway). We’ll be husky-sledding, snowmobile safari-ing, and if we’re really, really lucky, viewing the magical aurora borealis.
June and July – Beaches and Islands of Korea
This summer we’ll be squeezing in our beach escapes close to home. We hope to beat the humidity and the crowds, and refill our bank accounts by visiting Jeju Island, Gyeongpodae and Ulleungdo in June and July.
August: Western Canada Road Trip
We haven’t spent a significant amount of time in Canada, in quite a long while, and lately I’ve been feeling sentimental about where I grew up. In my early 20s, summer days used to mean road trips through the Rocky Mountains from Calgary to Vancouver, with stops for camping in interior British Columbia.
In August, I’ll be re-living my youth, and showing Agri exactly where I used to go during my summer vacations. We’ll be road-tripping, stopping at tacky roadside tourist traps, pitching a tent, eating flavourful BC cherries by the handful, soaking in Radium hot springs, and basically doing all the things I remember doing way back when…
December: Bali, Lombok and the Gilli Islands
We spent one week at the end of our round the world adventure in Ubud, Bali, and it wasn’t enough time by a longshot. This time around, we’ll do our best to leave Ubud (might be difficult), and venture over to Lombok and the Gilli Islands.
Unknown: Malaysia’s Perhentian Islands
We’ve been wanting to land on the white, sandy beaches of the Perhentian Islands for quite some time now, but due to a pesky monsoon, all hotels and resorts are closed from November until March.
So far, it’s been difficult to arrange an appropriate time to visit. Will this be the year??
