Weekly Photo Challenge: Threes (Dog-mushing in Finnmark)

For this week’s Weekly Photo Challenge we’re heading to Karasjok, Norway in the Arctic Circle.

Way up at 69 degrees north, at Sven Engholm’s husky farm, (he, the 11 time winner of Europe’s longest dog sled race, the 1000 kilometre long, Finnmarkslopet), there’s a lot of snow and 50 beautiful huskies anxious to hit the trail running.

As soon as they’re harnessed to a sled, they start barking, wild with excitement. The sound is both deafening and infectious.

When the dogs start sprinting however, this chaos gives way to absolute silence, and the exhilarating feeling of the arctic wind across your face, as you dodge tree branches and flying snow (and try desperately not to fall off the sled!)

    • We did about 30 kilometres on the sleds that day, and the weather changed a lot over the course of it. Some parts were very, very windy and sooo cold, but it’s been surprisingly and worryingly mild up here. I don’t think it should be +5 in the Arctic Circle in February. 😦

      • No, I don’t think so, either. Everyone in the United States is acting like climate change isn’t happening since we’ve been bombarded with a crazy winter. What they don’t realize is that it’s a symptom of global “weirding,” and that unusually high temps have been found elsewhere. Glad you’re getting to see the Arctic while it still exists 😦

    • Lol…especially when you go flying off the sled when the dogs turn a corner too fast. Like I did. SIX times! OUCH! πŸ˜‰
