Calling all Expats in Seoul! The Suncheon Bay Walking Festival Wants You!

This is a re-post regarding the Suncheon Bay Walking Festival which was postponed due to the Sewol Ferry Tragedy. The festival has been confirmed for June 21-22nd.

If you’ve never heard of Suncheon Bay, I wouldn’t be surprised. After all, it’s hidden 4 hours away from Seoul, on Korea’s South Coast in the Jeollanamdo Province, between the Yeosu and Goheung peninsulas.

I’d never heard of it either, but it turns out that it’s one of the world’s top 5 coastal wetlands, covered with reeds as tall as a man, and attracting approximately 140 species of wild birds.

Visitors to the Bay can expect fields upon fields of gigantic reeds swaying gently in the wind, possible sightings of internationally rare birds such as the hooded crane, white stork or the black-faced spoonbill, glorious sunsets, and the peace of nature – all things that every Seoulite craves from time to time.

On June 21st, as part of the 4th International Suncheon Bay ECO Walking Festival, visitors can participate in 5, 10 or 25 kilometre walking courses that wind through the Suncheon Bay Ecological Park’s 22 square kilometres of mudflats and 5.4 square kilometres of reed beds.

When your feet become weary, you can check out the atmospheric Nakan-eupseong (Castle) folk village, the film set used in the Korean drama, East of Eden, or Songgwang Temple.

The best part? You can have your time amongst the reeds, for just 50,000 won ($50).

As part of a special deal for expats in Seoul, the Chairman of the festival is offering transport to and from Suncheon, 1 night’s accommodation, festival entrance fees, and an international friendship dinner to anyone who’s interested in attending.

If you’re interested, send me a message through the Connect Form, located on the top menu of our blog, and I can provide you with more details.

  1. Thanks for sharing this. I hate to add a link as a comment but I previously wrote something about Suncheon Bay and thought you would like it.

Maybe it’d give you and readers a heads up on how awesome that place is to visit.

    • I read that post of yours actually, quite a while ago!! 🙂 I’m glad you think Suncheon Bay is worth the visit! I’m sad I won’t be able to attend the event myself, but I guess I can’t REALLY complain since I’ll be on the beaches of Thailand instead. 😉

  2. Striking nature sights, and that walking path is insane! It would be so amazing to see it in person… and so awesome to walk it.

    • You’d be signing up for the insane 25km walking course, wouldn’t you? 😀 But yeah, I love the circular paths, landscaping, and the long walking bridges that stretch over the water. They’ve done it in such an interesting way.
