Late autumn in Seoul is probably my favourite time of year. Sure, it starts to get a bit chilly, but we’re rewarded with brilliant red maple leaves colouring the skies and streets.

The fall foliage is sticking around a lot longer this year, but it’s getting quite a bit colder in the next weeks. Get out and see them before they disappear completely.

Fortunately, you don’t have to go anywhere special to see them (they’re literally all over the city), but here are a few places to try to see maple trees:

🍁 Ewha Woman’s University
🍁 Seoul Forest
🍁 Olympic Park

If you happen to be cycling around Seoul, and get

If you happen to be cycling around Seoul, and get a flat, never fear… because you can literally walk into this Bicycle Repair Centre and get it fixed for free. No lie.

This was definitely another “how is this even possible?” moment in Korea - but it was totally real.

I literally walked in, got my flat tire fixed, and my bike tuned up, and walked out - all in the space of about 15 minutes. All I had to do was leave my name and number on a sheet of paper before I left, but this was just for tracking purposes. You DO NOT need a Korean number to take advantage of this service.

There’s also an air pump and a bunch of bike repair tools outside the centre for free use.

Open from Monday to Saturday from 9-6, with a break for lunch from 12-1, no appointment necessary.

There are many places in Korea to try on a hanbok, but the Haenggeung (Temporary) Palace at Namhansanseong Fortress might be one of the quietest, and most affordable.

There’s not a huge selection of hanbok to choose from, but since it’s free, you can’t really complain, can you?

There is a 2,000 won entrance fee for the Haenggung that’s well worth the price. It’s UNESCO World Heritage, gorgeous, deserted, and the perfect backdrop for your Joseon Era photoshoot.

Namhansanseong is a UNESCO World Heritage site, that served as an Emergency Palace and fortress during the Joseon Dynasty.

It sits 500-metres above sea level, and is a 12.4-km long fortress that utilizes the ridges of the mountain for the best defensive capacity.

There are several hiking courses of varying difficulties and lengths that take you along fortress walls, through ancient gates, and past shrines and temples.

If you want to catch this particular traditional performance, head to the Inhwagwan, this Sunday, October 29th at 2pm. It’s free!

Good to know:
- There are plenty of restaurants serving traditional Korean food, and cute cafes lining the streets of Namhansan.
- Parking is limited, so public transit is recommended.
- Search on Naver maps for the best route. There are no subways to the top of the mountain, but the bus stop name is “Namhansanseong | 남한산성.“
- Trees are starting to change colour,and should be in full swing in about a week or so.
- It can get chilly, so best to bring layers of clothing.

Trees in Seoul are starting to change colour!!

In cooler, higher ares, like near Eunpyeong-gu and Bukhansan where my uncle lives, I’ve already seen a ton of gorgeous yellow trees, lining the streets.

South of the Hangang, in Gangnam area, it’s still mostly green, but little pops of colour are definitely starting to show. It’ll take about a month for all these leaves to change, with deeper reds and golden yellows happening in late autumn.

Nestled within a narrow mountaintop valley of stun

Nestled within a narrow mountaintop valley of stunning trees, Guinsa Temple is truly magnificent in autumn.

Guinsa Temple is the headquarters of the Cheontae-jong Order in Korea. The temples of this order are elaborate, colourful, and totally unique in Korea.

This is definitely not a case of “you’ve seen one temple in Korea you’ve seen them all.” Guinsa is worth your time.

TIP: it’s a long and steep climb up the road to Guinsa Temple, that cars technically aren’t allowed to drive on, but taxis will take you up there, off the metre. We started walking up and once we were past the eyes of security, taxis appeared offering a ride to the top. We shared a taxi with a few others for 20,000 won. He took us up a back road to the very top, and we made our way DOWN through the temple, instead of up, as is usual.
