Travel Memory: An Amalfi Coast Scooter Ride

August 2007: From Sorrento to Amalfi and back on a decrepit 50cc Vespa.

Traffic on the Amalfi Coast road is beyond insane, with full-size tour buses, rental cars driven by gawking tourists, reckless Italian scooter drivers and pedestrians all vying for space on harrowing, windy cliffside roads.

We barely survived, but the views were certainly worth it! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  1. I like these little flashback posts. We did this exact scooter trip in 2006 pre kids/blog and absolutely loved it. You’re right, it’s beyond insane. On a more recent trip in 2012 I hitched a ride on the back of an Italian’s scooter through Rome and got to experience the madness from their perspective, I loved that also! There’s something addictive about danger.

    • It was terrifying, but such a fun experience at the same time! ๐Ÿ™‚ If you’re addicted to danger, you should come to Seoul and get on the back of my husband’s scooter. He learned how to drive in Rome, and well…you already know what that’s like! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  2. Loved the Amalfi Coast, but I traveled it on the bus. I was lucky enough to get the front seat, both ways, so stellar views and no need to worry about driving. Does help to go before or after high season….

    • Ohhh, it wasn’t scary on the bus?! I felt terrified just watching those bus drivers careen around the cliffside corners. Yes, unfortunately we were there in August, right in the thick of high season…

      • I was too busy admiring the scenery to notice the driving! I went in late April, and it was already filling up.

  3. The Amalfi Coast is beyond gorgeous!! I’m glad you traveled through the region on a Vespa, so that you could see the gorgeousness more clearly.

    • Haha, except for when I had my eyes tightly closed, while praying that we would make it back alive!!! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  4. Ahihihihi I love how Italians, maybe just Neapolitans, just go outside their cars when there is heavy traffic… in the middle of the road. Bwahaha I love, love, love Amalfi coast. Sadly, I lost my pictures of it. I accidently erased my folder of it. ๐Ÿ™ Thanks for the memory nudge. Well hey, without bias, your images are better than mine as far I remember.

    • Haha, yeah, it’s like their completely fearless (or maybe clueless?) of the danger around them. Either that or they think they’re invincible! Oh no! It’s terrible you lost your photos! Just means you’ll have to go back and visit again. (and I don’t believe you that my images are better than yours…) ๐Ÿ˜‰

  5. Beautiful pictures and that would scare me too, but glad you made it, and have a great memory! Thanks for visiting my blog and liking it. I like yours as well!

    • There’s no way I would’ve done it without my husband. He’s definitely the daredevil in our relationship and I end up in a lot of situations I normally wouldn’t get into because of him. Always a bit scary for me, but usually I end up with a good story because of it. ๐Ÿ™‚ Thanks for dropping by!
