We Made it to Finnish Lapland!
Travel definitely takes a bit longer when the population is sparse. We’ve been moving since 9:00 this morning. First, a 1.5 hour flight from Helsinki to Ivalo – the gateway to Lapland – followed by the most expensive 10 kilometre taxi ride I’ve ever taken, from the airport to Ivalo Town (population 5000), followed by a 2 hour wait for the bus that would take us to Lake Inari.
On the plus side, we had a great and inexpensive lunch buffet in Ivalo, and surprisingly, there’s free wifi, all over the place. I guess Laplanders like to feel connected.
We made it to our hotel around 4:30, and now we are (im)patiently waiting for nightfall. The skies are crystal clear and completely devoid of clouds, and joy of joys, the aurora made an appearance last night!
Will we get lucky and fulfill a long dreamt travel wish tonight?
