Weekly Photo Challenge: Work of Art

For this week’s Photo Challenge on Work of Art, we’re talking coffee. Because I am utterly and completely devoted to my first sip of coffee in the morning. Without it, the day just isn’t right. It must be just so, with the right creaminess, strength, quality and sweetness.

At home, it’s easy to regulate this daily ritual, so that it always satisfies, but on the road it’s a bit more challenging.

Some countries do better than others in this caffeinated contest. Colombian’s make my favourite cuppa, hand-down, but strangely, not really in Colombia.

Italians of course, make a divine latte macchiato, but why must they drink it standing up, and lukewarm?

The Turks introduced coffee to Europe, and straight up black, or with milk, they do it right.

In Ubud, Bali, the daily cup of joe has really been turned into a work of art. Luscious outdoor seating, hand-crafted concoctions and arty servings were a normal part of this morning ritual at Senimen Coffee Studio.

    • Lol…some of these hardly tasted like coffee. Especially the chocolatey one in Rome. It was sooo sweet!!

  4. Yum!! I love trying different types of coffee when I’m on the road, and recently did a project on Italian “bars,” so I’ll have some answers as to why they drink it the way they do soon. Great post!

    • My husband grew up in Rome, and the first time he took me there, I wanted a latte in the afternoon. The horrified look he gave me was like I’d just skinned a cat alive or something. A post on the “rules” of Italian coffee sounds like something we all need. 🙂

  5. Oh yeah I definitely love my coffee! In fact, I recently purchased an Ikea milk frother via Amazon. Homemade cappuccinos every morning now!

    • Oooh, sounds like heaven!! I’m coming over for breakfast. :p I have one of those miniature battery operated frothers, but I have my greedy eye on the Nespresso Aeroccino. Haven’t been able to justify it to myself quite yet though…

    • Ooh, I’ll need to look that one up! I also read recently that you can shake up your ice coffee in a martini shaker for a frothier consistency.

      • Have either of you tried a Greek frappe? It’s an iced coffee that they make, using instant coffee… but I believe it’s shaken up in a martini shaker. Believe it or not, it’s delicious, instant coffee and all, and totally synonymous with summer on the Greek isles… 😀

    • Sigh. It’s a serious addiction, isn’t it? 😀 Actually, we’re so lucky with coffee here. It’s everywhere AND it’s good. There are also a lot of crazy cafes here – Dogs, Cats, Fish that eat your feet, Sheep, Book Cafes, Game Board Cafes…you name it, it’s probably here…

  7. I definitely agree about morning without coffee not being right. Just last weekend, I had to drive around in circles to find a cup of coffee before I get to the highway. There was just no way for me to continue without it. 😀 My passenger friend had to compromise and be patient with me. Bwahahaha! 😀 So where is your Fika experience fall among these? My bet is coffee shots in Italy and Spain.

    • Haha, we would really get along Rommel. I can’t go anywhere without coffee, and have been known to go far out of my way to make sure I get a good cup! Hmm…the fika was fun, but I must admit that the coffee wasn’t the best. Honestly, I’ve had some of the best coffee right here in Seoul! They really go extreme on things, and like to really perfect whatever they’re doing.
