How to Book the Sky Capsule Busan at Haeundae Blueline Park + 5 Personal Tips

After months of seeing these adorable retro trains all over my social media feed, I just KNEW I had to take a ride on the Sky Capsule Busan at Haeundae Blueline Park myself, and I finally got my chance!

Honestly, there’s something so cute about sitting in these colourful little retro cars, crawling along an elevated track right over the ocean. It has some of the best coastal views you’ll find anywhere in Korea.

I HAD to take a ride on the Sky Capsule Busan!

But because it’s gone completely viral over the last few years, actually getting on it isn’t as simple as just showing up and buying a ticket. The online reservation system sells out weeks in advance, the website can be a bit of a headache to navigate, and the Sky Capsule, Beach Train, and Busan Green Railway are all in the same place. Honestly? It’ s a little confusing.

I want to make sure you don’t run into any of these issues on your trip. These are my personal, up-to-date tips for how to secure your tickets online, how to handle the logistics at the stations, and how to have the best experience possible without the stress.

What is the Sky Capsule Busan? | 해운대스카이캡슐

In a nutshell, the Sky Capsule Busan is a coastal capsule train that runs on an elevated track between Mipo Station, located right near Haeundae Beach, and Cheongsapo Station, which sits 2.3-km away.

You can’t miss the adorable sky capsule!

These retro-looking sky capsules come in eye-catching red, yellow, green, and blue (though there are also a few pink ones!), and they’re impossible to miss.

The Haeundae Sky Capsule actually uses the discontinued Donghae Nambu railway tracks. Because the capsules travel on a lofty position 7 to 10-metres above the ground, you’ll see completely uninterrupted views of the seascape and Busan’s magnificent skyscrapers in the distance.

Where is the Sky Capsule Busan located?

If you want to take a ride on the Sky Capsule, you’ll have to get down to Busan – and specifically to Haeundae Blueline Park.

It’s not much of a sacrifice though. Really.

Busan is Korea’s second largest city, with many visitors enjoying it even more than Seoul. After my most recent trip, I can certainly understand the appeal. With wonderful beaches, a stunning skyline, and lively locals, it has a relaxed vacation feel that can be difficult to find in the capital.

Haeundae Blueline Park is undoubtedly one of the best places in Busan to take advantage of the incredible natural environment.

Located next to a gorgeous stretch of coastline, this is where you’ll find not only the Sky Capsule Busan, but also the Beach Train, and the Busan Green Railway coastal walking path.

Where to Book Haeundae Sky Capsule Tickets?

Because the Sky Capsule is one of the absolute most popular things to do in Busan, getting your tickets is the very first thing you need to sort out. Luckily, there are a few different ways to book your ride depending on how you plan to travel.

Directly on the Haeundae Blueline Park Website

You can book tickets for the Sky Capsule Busan directly on the official site here. The booking page is fully in english and accepts foreign credit cards, which makes it pretty straightforward.

You can book the Sky Capsule Busan online.

When you book, you’ll have to choose whether you want to depart from Mipo or Cheongsapo Station, as well as choose a specific boarding time with a 30 minute arrival window. Something to keep in mind when deciding which route to book, is that the Mipo to Cheongsapo route runs is on the outer track closest to the East Sea, giving you completely clear ocean views.

The Cheongsapo to Mipo route runs on the inner track, meaning an oncoming capsule will occasionally pass between you and the sea view. This is the route we took, and I actually really enjoyed the view of the capsules next to the ocean!

Once you’re actually on the Haeundae Sky Capsule, it’s a slow, relaxing 30 minutes to complete the ride.

As Part of a Guided Busan Tour

Booking your ride on the Haeundae Sky Capsule as part of a guided tour is an easy way to see some of Busan’s best attractions, without any extra logistical hassles. If you’re a solo traveler, it’s great money-saver too, since you won’t have to splash out the full 35,000 won to take a private capsule all by yourself.

The included transport between places like Gamcheon Culture Village, Haedong Yonggungsa Temple, Songdo Skywalk, and Taejongdae is especially convenient.

These landmarks are spaced pretty far apart across Busan, and trying to navigate between them on local buses or subways can take up a ton of your limited travel time.

Here are the best tour options available right now that include a guaranteed ride on the Sky Capsule Busan.

At Haeundae Blueline Park Ticket Offices (On-Site)

There are a strictly limited number of same-day tickets available on-site at the physical ticket offices located at either Mipo or Cheongsapo Station. If you failed to book your tickets in advance online, you can head down and try your luck there.

For the absolute best shot at scoring one of these emergency seats, make sure you get to the station as early in the morning as humanly possible. Same-day tickets are incredibly limited, and because the Sky Capsule is one of the most popular activities in all of Busan, they vanish fast.

Booking Tips for the Sky Capsule Busan

Now that I’ve ridden the Haeundae Sky Capsule myself, everything makes complete sense. Here’s what I wish I would’ve known before I booked my own trip.

Sky Capsules are Private

Each Sky Capsule is private, and seats a maximum of 4 people. This means that you won’t ever be grouped with strangers, but it also means that if you’re traveling solo, it’s a more expensive ride.

Prices for one private Sky Capsule capsule are as follows:

  • 1–2 People: 35,000 KRW
  • 3 People: 45,000 KRW
  • 4 People: 50,000 KRW

Each Sky Capsule Busan is private, and seats up to 4.

Keep in mind that the Sky Capsule is not covered by the Visit Busan Pass, so you’d have to pay these rates out of pocket. If you’re a solo traveler, it’s probably much better value to join a guided city tour instead. You’d be grouped with other people to split the experience and get added value by visiting other popular attractions in Busan or Gyeongju.

Personally, I think this excellent value tour that visits Gyeongju UNESCO sights like Bulguksa Temple and Donggung Palace, while also guaranteeing a ride on the Sky Capsule in Busan is so worth it. Gyeongju is basically a massive open-air museum and is always worth a visit.

One-Way Tickets Only

It’s important to choose which direction you’ll go from the start, since rides are sold as one-way tickets ONLY.

The Sky Capsule Busan has 2 departure stations: Mipo Station (right next to Haeundae Beach) and Cheongsapo Station. It’s more popular to start your ride from Mipo Station because it runs on the outer track closest to the open ocean. If you’re attached to a particular sunset time slot from Mipo, make sure to book at least a few weeks in advance.

There are a few ways to get through Haeundae Blueline Park.

Once you reach the opposite end, there’s a few different ways to get back to your original starting point. While you could buy a second one-way ticket to ride back or hop on the ground-level Beach Train, I highly recommend skipping the extra train tickets entirely.

Instead, enjoy a beautiful, slow stroll along the parallel Busan Green Railway Coastal Walking Trail. It runs right next to the ocean waves. I’ll go into more detail on how to walk it a bit later in this guide.

How to Time your Visit for Sunset

Sunset is understandably an incredibly popular time to ride the Haeundae Sky Capsule. These specific time slots are usually the first to sell out everyday, so make sure to book well in advance.

As a general rule of thumb, I would get in line for the Sky Capsule Busan about an hour BEFORE the projected sunset time for that day.

haeundae sky capsule busan at sunset
Arrive an hour in advance, if you want to see sunset from the Sky Capsule.

Sunset was at 7:18 on the day we visited, so we booked the 6:00 to 6:30 time slot, departing from Cheongsapo Station. We got in line at around 6:10, and were settled into our cute little capsule at around 6:30. I have to say, our timing was perfect. We got absolutely amazing shots of the sun setting over Haeundae Beach, as we approached Mipo Station.

Any later, and it would’ve been too dark to capture the colours.

The Sky Capsule Boarding Process

When you reserve your ticket online, you’re asked to choose a particular 30 minute window. This time slot is NOT the actual time of your ride on the Sky Capsule Busan, but simply a boarding window.

This means that if you chose the 6:00 – 6:30 time slot, you must arrive within that exact half-hour to join the line to get on the Haeundae Sky Capsules. If you arrive after your scheduled time, you could be refused boarding.

We waited in line for about 20 minutes before boarding our Sky Capsule Busan.

We personally waited in line for about 20 minutes before we were able to board our private capsule. Because the queues can get long, with people from previous time windows still be in line ahead of you – I recommend showing up at your Sky Capsule station at least 15 minutes before your 30 minute window opens to assess the situation.

Both Mipo and Cheongsapo stations have cafes, gift shops, and other amenities on-site, so it’s incredibly easy to pass the time if you’re early.

Haeundae Blueline Park: Busan Sky Capsule vs Beach Train Quick Guide

When I first started looking into this, one of the main things that confused me was that there are actually 2 different train services available at Haeundae Blueline Park – the Sky Capsule and the Beach Train.

haeundae blueline park: beach train vs sky capsule
There’s a few different attractions at Haeundae Blueline Park.

These run right next to each other along the same stretch of coastline, only the Sky Capsules are on an elevated track above, while the Beach Train runs on the ground level.

While I’ll explain more about the specific differences further on in this guide, this comparison table should help you understand the basic differences upfront so you know exactly what you are booking

My guess is that the Sky Capsule Busan is what you’ve seen on social media and want to book. It was for me!

What are the Sky Capsule Busan Departure Stations?

There are only 2 departure stations for the Haeundae Sky Capsule in Busan: Mipo Station and Cheongsapo Station.

You’ll have to know exactly which station you want to depart from when you book your tickets, so I’ll explain the difference between them here.

Departures from Mipo Station, usually sell out first.

Mipo Station | 해운대블루라인파크 미포정거장

Most people choose to book their tickets departing from Mipo Station. I think this is mostly because so many travelers choose to stay on Haeundae Beach, and it’s just a short walk across the beach to get to the platform from most of the major resorts.

The other reason the Mipo starting point is so popular is that the Mipo-to-Cheongsapo direction runs on the outer track closest to the open sea.

However, after riding the Sky Capsule Busan myself, I really don’t think this outer-track thing is a huge deal. The tracks in either direction are literally right next to each other, the little cars are staggered, and you get completely clear sea views throughout the entire 30-minute trip regardless of which way you go.

That said, departures from Mipo Station do sell out way faster, so make sure to book your tickets as soon as humanly possible if this is your first choice.

Cheongsapo Station | 해운대블루라인파크 청사포정거장

Cheongsapo is the only other departure station for the Sky Capsule Busan. It’s 2.3-km away from Mipo Station. These capsules run on the inner track, and Cheongsapo to Mipo is the direction to pick if you want to ride directly towards the setting sun.

Sky capsules departing from Cheongsapo Station use the inner track.

An added bonus? It’s way easier to book your tickets departing from the Cheongsapo side. This is what we ended up doing because Mipo was already completely sold out for the sunset window, and am I ever glad we did!

The view of Busan’s skyline and Haeundae Beach opening up in front of us as we came around the final coastal corner was absolutely jaw-dropping.

How to Get Between Mipo and Cheongsapo Station?

The question of how to get between Mipo and Cheongsapo Station is definitely a concern for most travelers, but it’s much easier than you think. I get it though – I didn’t realize just HOW easy it is, until I was actually IN Busan doing it myself!

haeundae sky capsule busan
A one-way ride on the Sky Capsule Busan is enough.

Of course, you can always book another one-way ticket back to your starting point on the opposite track, but I wouldn’t recommend it. A one-way ride is really enough. The Sky Capsule Busan travels really slowly, and you’ll have plenty of time to soak it all in during that first 30-minute trip.

Here are the other options for getting between the stations. To make navigating the coastal route effortlessly smooth, you’ll definitely want to make sure your data connectivity is completely sorted before you head down to the shoreline.

Korea Travel Essentials

Don’t board that plane to Seoul until you’ve sorted out accommodation, transport from the airport, and your data on the ground.

Haeundae Beach Train | 해운대해변열차

The Haeundae Beach Train runs right next to the Sky Capsule Busan, only its track is down at the ground level. It travels at a much faster 15-km per hour, and covers a total distance of 4.8-km, with stops at 6 separate stations.

Inside, there are two rows of ocean-facing benches, from which you can admire the coastal scenery through massive floor-to-ceiling windows. It’s also fully air-conditioned (unlike the capsules), so this could be a really good option if it’s crazy hot during your trip, or if you are managing mobility issues.

There are 2 rows of ocean-facing benches and big windows on the Beach Train.

There are a few cons to consider, however. Seats are completely unreserved, so you could easily end up standing for the entire ride if it’s crowded. And because of its location at sea level, some of your views can be blocked by coastal vegetation or other distractions.

How To Book Haeundae Beach Train Tickets

The Beach Train makes stops at 6 different stations. You can purchase tickets and board the train at any station, but you might not be able to get back on if you get off. It depends completelhy on which specific Beach Train ticket you purchase.

If you’d like to book your tickets online in advance, you can do that here, but only for boarding at the three main hubs: Mipo, Cheongsapo, or Songjeong Stations. If you want to board at the smaller platforms like Dalmaji Tunnel, Daritdol Skywalk, or Gudeokpo, you’ll need to buy your tickets on-site using an automated ticketing kiosk.

Before you book ANY Haeundae Beach Train ticket, it’s incredibly important to research your entire route and know exactly what you plan to do, or you risk being stranded somewhere along the coast. Tickets are sold for a very particular boarding time, and there are absolutely no refunds or schedule changes available if you miss your window.

Personally, I found the whole beach train thing kind of confusing, not overly flexible, and not that user-friendly. In my opinion, the only way the beach train is actually workable as a return option for the Sky Capsule Busan, is if you buy the All-Day Pass that allows you to get off and re-board at every single station once.

If you only want to use it as a basic return option from either Mipo or Cheongsapo Station before or after riding your Busan Sky Capsule, then a stroll along the Busan Green Railway is a MUCH better option without any time limitations. And it’s completely free!

How Much do Haeundae Beach Train Tickets Cost?

That said, here are the official ticket options available if you’d still like to book the Haeundae Beach Train:

  • Pass for a Single Ride (7,000 KRW): There is absolutely no re-entry once you step off. This is literally for getting on at Songjeong, Cheongsapo, or Mipo Station, and then getting off at your final endpoint.
  • Pass for 2 Rides (12,000 KRW): This version allows you to re-board the train exactly once at a single station along the track.
  • Pass for All-Stops (16,000 KRW): This is the ultimate track pass that allows you to get off and re-board at every single one of the 6 stations exactly once.

Make sure to plan your entire itinerary out step-by-step before locking down these tickets!

Just keep in mind that this combo is not really a viable option for solo travelers. Here are the package prices:

The entire trail is a 4.8-km long wooden boardwalk that runs adjacent to the Beach Train tracks on one side, and the crashing waves of the gorgeous coastline on the other.

This flat, easy-to-walk pedestrian path stretches all the way from Mipo Station, winding past the Dalmaji Tunnel and Cheongsapo Station, before finally ending at the former Songjeong Station. Along the way, you’ll find plenty of short offshoot pathways leading down to scenic skywalks, dramatic sea observatories, hidden beaches, quiet pine forests, and charming local coastal cafes.

Busan Green Railway | Cheongsapo Daritdol Observatory
The Cheongsapo Daritdol Observatory is accessed from the Busan Green Railway.

We personally walked this 2.3-km stretch from Haeundae Beach over to Cheongsapo Station with our two kids, and we did not hear a single word of complaint the entire time (which, as any parent knows, is a total miracle in and of itself!).

The walk takes roughly 30 minutes at a leisurely pace, but honestly, you won’t even feel the distance in the slightest. The coastal trail is just that spectacular, with a constant rotation of beautiful ocean views and fun places to explore. If you want a flexible, stress-free, and completely free return route for your Haeundae Sky Capsule experience, this boardwalk is absolutely the way to go!

    1. Hi Jane, have you tried on both mobile and desktop? Sometimes that works. Also, I believe you have to have some kind of 3D secure payment activated on your card, so maybe call your bank and make sure it has that.
